10th Infantry Batt. FCA honoured in Gorey

Canon Mark Hayden, Rector of Gorey Union of Parishes, and Cllr Malcolm Byrne, Cathaoirleach, Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District Council,, with uniformed personnel at the 60th anniversary of the 10th Infantry Battalion FCA in Christ Church, Gorey.

There was a fine attendance at the 60th Anniversary of the 10th Infantry Battalion FCA commemoration ceremony held in Christ Church, Gorey, on Saturday night.

The celebrant was Canon Mark Hayden, Rector of the Gorey Union of Parishes, and Cllr Malcolm Byrne, Cathaoirleach of the Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District Council, was also present The 10th (O’Hanrahan) Battalion has its headquarters in Wexford Military Barracks and the Battalion areas covers all of Co. Wexford, a large part of Co. Carlow and parts of counties Wicklow, Kildare and Laois are also included.

‘A’ Company has its headquarters in Wexford Barracks and is commanded by Lt. Richie Bolger. Twenty-three miles west of Wexford at New Ross, the ‘B’ Company has its headquarters and apart from the town itself the sub-unit has centres in Cushinstown,Caim, Fethard and Glynn commanded by Capt. M.A. McDonald.

‘C’ Company is the largest with its headquarters in Carnew and two other centres at Tinahely and Shillelagh. Just over the Carlow border is the Clonegal Centre where Co. Wexford is represented by platoons based in Enniscorthy,Gorey, Ferns and Bunclody, and Bunclody ‘C’ Company is under the command of Comdt. Denis Byrne, the only FCA Commandant still serving in the 10th.

The 10th recruited in North Wexford from 1959 until 2005 and many families had a strong tradition of service. The 60th anniversary has been remembered with pride and ceremony and a large gathering of FCA members past and present.
