Kitesurfer airlifted to hospital from Our Lady’s Island

Search and rescue helicopter 117 tasked to Our Lady's Island this afternoon.

Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117 from Waterford was called to Our Lady’s Island this afternoon after a kitesurfer ‘came down hard’ in a storm and suffered a suspected broken leg.

The incident occurred at about 3.20 pm when the man was close to the rocks and was blown onto the shoreline where he sustained a serious injury on landing.

The man was treated by paramedics from the National Ambulance Service as well as volunteers from the Carnsore/Rosslare Coast Guard and Rescue 117 arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.

The helicopter transported the man to Waterford Airport and an ambulance took him to University Hospital Waterford for treatment.
