Damien McGrane scored a one-shot victory in the 109th Irish PGA Championship at Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club, sponsored by TLC Nursing Homes, and brought quality golf to the North Wexford town this week.

The Carlow GC professional cruised round in level par to edge out Michael McGeady (Evolve Golf Coaching) who posted a best of the week round of 64.

McGrane, the 2016 Irish PGA Champion, started the day with a four-shot advantage and showed all his experience, crafting a round that featured one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars to finish the tournament on seven under par.

“I’ve realised that some of my colleagues might never win this trophy so when you do win, you need to be mindful and respectful of that fact,” the 48 year old told RTE Sport.

“I’m glad to win it for a second time. It’s a stepping stone. I’m nearly 50 – a year and a half – and I’m hoping I will be in good shape to be able to compete on the seniors’ tour,” he concluded.

Bunclody Golf & Fishing Club is a 7,164 parkland golf course beside the River Slaney on the Carlow-Wexford border, open since March 2009 and set on 300 acres of the former Hall-Dare estate and it was a great honour for the club to be chosen to host the 2019 Irish PGA Championships. It is fast becoming another glittering jewel in the crown in Ireland’s offering of fine golf courses.
