A new exhibition called ‘Enniscorthy Industries’ was officially launched by the Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Cllr Keith Doyle, at Enniscorthy Castle tonight.
Cllr Doyle said he was honoured to launch an exhibition of history and business and alluded to its importance in tourism and a reminder of the families who traded there in the past.
Liz Hore, District Manager, thanked Liam Doyle and the County Archivist, Grainne Doran, for putting the exhibition together.
Local historian Aidan Ryan said alongside milling and malting, other industries and trades were also important contributors to the prosperity of Enniscorthy over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries.
“These included wholesale trading, carriage manufacturing, brewing, distilling, cutlery manufacturing and the strawberry industry.”
Mr Ryan spoke in glowing terms about Colm Breen, who owned the carriage manufacturing business known as the Rock Factory, and was talented in many ways as a local character and artist.
The exhibition is open to the public.
