Fintan’s refuse the Duffry

Despite battling back from a slow start for the second week running, Duffry Rovers had to ultimately settle for yet another draw as St. Fintan’s conjured a magic late goal in their Group B Amber Springs & Ashdown Park county intermediate football championship clash on Friday.

The Duffry were 1-4 to 0-1 in arrears a week earlier before drawing with HWH-Bunclody.

And in Friday’s second-round encounter with the Fintan’s at St. Patrick’s Park, the Duffry found themselves down 0-3 to 0-0 after ten minutes.

But the side managed by former Carlow ace Johnny Nevin bounced back to lead 0-8 to 0-4 at half-time.

The Duffry were still looking good when enjoying a tidy 0-13 to 0-7 advantage with ten minutes remaining.

St. Fintan’s, however, weren’t to be denied as they atoned for their opening weekend loss to Ferns by pulling out a 1-11 to 0-14 draw after a close-in free was smartly moved across to Eoin O’Callaghan to drive a low finish through a number of legs and to the town-end net (see Lar Sutton’s exclusive video on our page).

The remaining second-round games in Group B are scheduled as a double-header today (Saturday) at St. Patrick’s – with last year’s beaten finalists Bunclody up against Adamstown at 6p.m., and then Ferns versus Ballyhogue at 7.30p.m.
