Workers on the new roundabout at the end of the new M11 Enniscorthy bypass discovered a quantity of gun parts today and Gardai from Enniscorthy are investigating how the weapons came to be there.
The workers were excavating a drain as part of the new roundabout under construction at Scurloughsbush on the N11 about a mile from Oylegate village when the ‘find’ was made.
It is understood that the ‘find’ was wrapped in plastic covering and located about three feet from the surface. Local sources say that most of the material consisted of rifle barrels.
Work was halted and Gardai ensured the scene was safe.
Gardai are anxious to establish the owners of the objects and to find out how they got there.
One local theory, unconfirmed, is that the material may be the contents of gunsmith storage and was disposed of when the N11 was widened and reconstructed some years ago.
