Enniscorthy 3
Weston 2
Saturday saw Enniscorthy ladies’ seconds XI battle against Weston’s thirds in a thrillingly close match, concluding in a 3-2 win to Enniscorthy.
Hosts Enniscorthy, currently second in the league table, were hopeful that their success would continue with a victory against Weston’s thirds, who are currently ninth in the league.
Enniscorthy started off confidently, with great pressure from the midfield and forward lines maintaining possession. Weston fought back, but their efforts were swiftly put to rest by the determined D’Alton, Bolger, Creed and O’Brien in the back line.
Some skilful play by Enniscorthy resulted in a series of penalty corners, which were narrowly missed by the home team. Enniscorthy didn’t give up the fight, with Neville and Yates putting immense pressure on the Weston back line. Some great passing from the Enniscorthy forward line resulted in an early goal for the home team, scored by the speedy Parnell.
Enniscorthy’s efforts were rewarded once again, when their determined midfield line of Kelly, Redmond and Lett pressed forward with great determination, resulting in an outstanding goal by Murphy. Weston, though, were undeterred, fighting back with a penalty corner effort, ensuing a goal for the away team. At half time, the home team were feeling the pressure of maintaining their position of second in the league, and knew they had to step up the pressure.
Enniscorthy fought hard to maintain their lead, with close collaboration between Redmond, Lett and Murphy. Twenty minutes into the second half, the determined west Dublin side managed to battle their way through the Enniscorthy backline, and equalised. The Enniscorthy ladies stepped the intensity up a notch, and great pressure and collaboration between Lett and Kelly, concluded in a ball being sent into the skilful Doyle, resulting in a spectacular goal, giving the home team the lead once again, which they maintained until the end.
The ladies seconds are due to play again on the 23rd of March for their final match of the season, hosting UCD’s 8th team; the students are currently sixth in the league table. Enniscorthy know that a win – following Bray’s defeat to Skerries on Saturday – guarantees promotion.
