Cllr Martin Murphy from Templetown, who has been a member of Wexford County Council for the past dozen years has announced that he will not seek re-election in the forthcoming May Local Elections.
Cllr Murphy said; “I am 68 and it’s a lot of commitment to sign up for another five years, meaning I’d be 73 when I’d be finishing up. I just decided another five years wasn’t necessary.”
A former lighthouse keeper, Cllr Murphy was first elected to Wexford County Council on a Fianna Fáil ticket.
Cllr Murphy said he felt confident about retaining his seat in May and he enjoyed representing the people of the Fethard-on-Sea and Hook Peninsula area, but age was against him.
In recent times Cllr Murphy served as an Independent member and was highly respected by his fellow councillors and officials and can be content in the fact that “he served his area well.”
