Sitting member Cllr Fionntán Ó Suilleabhán was tonight selected by Sinn Féin to contest the new Gorey Local Elections Area for the Local Elections next May at a selection convention held in the Loch Garman Arms.
Cllr Ó Suilleabhán said it was an honour to have served the people of Co. Wexford for almost five years and, in particular, his constituents in the Gorey District.
He thanked his team and everyone who supported him and and all the others who couldn’t come but sent messages of support.
“I have worked hard and made a promise to be a strong voice for the people in my area and if I am lucky enough to get voted in again I will continue to be that strong voice and continue to work tirelessly on your behalf,” said Cllr Ó Suilleabhán, who added; “I am once again asking people to get involved and help my re-election campaign.”
Cllr Ó Suilleabhán (1,326 votes) was elected on the First Count with Cllr Malcolm Byrne (1,688 votes), who topped the poll, in the 2014 Local Elections for Gorey in the new Municipal District Council arrangements that repleced the town councils.
A primary teacher by professon he had taught classes in Balymun-Finglas for almost 17 years and also worked at Tara Hill, Ballygarrett, Kilmuckridge and Gaelscoil Moshíológ, Gorey. He was an activist for the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) and is passionate about the Irish language.
The new Gorey LEA comprises the electoral divisions of Gorey, Courtown, Clough, Camolin, Ballyduff, Askamore, Craanford, Tara Hill, Castletown, Inch, Hollyfort, Monaseed, Kilanerin, Coolgreany, Ballyfad and Ballythomas.
