Glynn-Barntown 5-11 Taghmon-Camross 3-6
New signing Shane Wilde bagged 2-0 in a super-sub contribution, including one in added-time along with fellow replacement Barry Doyle as 2016 finalists Glynn-Barntown eventually cracked Taghmon-Camross in Sunday’s Tom Doyle Supplies county senior football Group B clash at a pleasant St. Patrick’s Park.
2016 intermediate champions Taghmon weren’t without a chance after goals from Darren Carty and Anthony Breen got Jason Ryan’s men back to within 3-9 to 3-6 on 53 minutes. But Glynn kicked 2-2 without reply in the added-time to claim a deserved winning start to the campaign in advance of next weekend’s mouth-watering duel with defending champions Starlights.
Glynn led 1-5 to 0-3 at half-time as Mark Fanning overcame having a 17th-minute penalty brilliantly saved by Jack Dunne to return with a vengeance on 19 minutes as he netted for a 1-3 to 0-3 lead which extended to five points at the break.
The Killurin men lacked a real cutting-edge upfront, but Shane Wilde (a transfer from Sarsfields) arrived from the subs’ bench to ram home an inch-perfect delivery from Michael O’Regan on 47 minutes and open-up a daunting 2-9 to 1-4 gap.
Yet Taghmon were stubborn, and while wing-back Darren Carty saw his 50th-minute goal quickly negated by one from O’Regan, the New Ross district men netted again on 53 minutes through midfielder Anthony Breen to mean they couldn’t be ruled out when trailing by just 3-6 to 3-9.
Indeed, it wasn’t until added-time that Glynn-Barntown could finally breathe easily as they put the result beyond doubt with that closing burst of 2-2.
