An investigation is under way following the discovery of skeletal remains at Ballyandrew, about half-way between Ferns and Kilrush.
The remains were discovered in a ditch by the side of a road by a person out walking at 11.30 am.
The scene has been preserved pending the arrival of a State Pathologist.
Gardaí say they do not yet know how long the remains have been there.
