Hockey- Mens 2 win & lose over the weekend

Cian Hogan scored three times in two days for Enniscorthy's men's second XI

Enniscorthy 2

Corinthians 3

Two rapid-fire second half goals from Corinthians helped the Dublin side to a 3-2 win over Enniscorthy’s men’s second XI in Division 6 on Saturday.

Five minutes in, the visitors took the lead, and sustained this pressure for a full twenty-five minutes before Enniscorthy seriously threatened the Dubliners goal. Cian Hogan, advancing at speed into the Corinthians semi-circle, was fouled and from the resulting penalty corner, Hogan got his first of the afternoon.

This seemed to have the required effect on the home side, promising moves from Sweeney and Jason Rothwell, though, not finding a purple shirt inside the Corinthians semi-circle.

After the break Mark Ennett proved to be a strong performer for Enniscorthy, while Glen Rothwell made an amazing triple save to keep the men in red out. Seven minutes after the interval Enniscorthy found themselves with a wealth of chances, earning a long corner and two penalty corners inside three minutes, but the Corinthians defence held firm.

Then came a red wave and how Enniscorthy will rue these missed chances, as Corinthians scored twice inside three minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Hogan grabbed his second of the game with three minutes remaining, but the Enniscorthy charge was too little, too late.

Pembroke Wanderers V 1

Enniscorthy 3

The men’s second eleven bounced back in style after Saturday’s narrow home defeat when they travelled to Serpentine Avenue to take on Pembroke Wanderers V.

The Dublin 4 side began brightly, finding a way past Glen Rothwell in the Enniscorthy goal with just minutes on the clock.

Pressure from the visiting side came to nothing, with Pembroke forcing a superb save from Glen Rothwell from a penalty corner on fifteen minutes a warning that they remained dangerous.

The Wexford men refused to be cowed, and a neat interchange ten minutes later resulted in a shot which went narrowly wide. Despite a second Pembroke penalty corner, Enniscorthy continued to look dangerous themselves, only a last ditch tackle preventing an equaliser on 25 minutes. Two further Pembroke penalty corners illustrates the ding-dong nature of the encounter.

After the break Rothwell in the Enniscorthy goal was forced into a fine double save, the experienced Mick Jordan called in to clear the lines, and from the resulting build up play Enniscorthy earned three penalty corners in a row, but were unable to convert any of their chances.

But it was the last ten minutes of the game that saw the scoreline turned on its head. First of all a Pembroke free was intercepted; two passes between the Enniscorthy attack found Craig Symes, who got the equaliser. Two minutes later an Enniscorthy counter-attack lead to Cian Hogan grabbing his third goal in two days, and with six minutes remaining Leo Durnan ensured all three points would head down the N11 and a 3-1 win.

Squad: Glen Rothwell, Clive Rothwell, Jack Doran, Ivan Rothwell, Cian Hogan, Niall Maguire, Graeme Chapman, Leo Durnan, Mick Jordan, Mark Ennett, Craig Symes
