WEXFORD HOCKEY Club’s Ladies 1s got back to winning ways at the Astro Active Centre in Enniscorthy on Saturday afternoon when they took on Botanic 1s in the first round of the Division 3/4 cup.
After a two week break, the team were fresh and ready to go, despite the wet and windy conditions that brought an added challenge to the day.
Wexford started strongly and had a number of good chances, stemming from good interplay between midfield and the forwards. Botanic favoured a high forward and looked dangerous with this tactic, but the Wexford backs diligently policed their players and made their tackles count.
Despite Wexford’s pressure and short corner count, the score remained at 0-0. The team rattled the net shortly before half-time through Sinead McDonnell but the goal was disallowed as it was deemed to have been struck too high from a short corner.
Play resumed and Wexford kept the pressure on, winning a number of further short corners and finally getting themselves on the score sheet through sharp shooter Miriam ‘Bert’ Lambert who took control of a shot rebounding from a Botanic player’s block and slotted it to the back of the net.
Wexford continued to pile the pressure on Botanic while maintaining control in their back line. Botanic had one or two chances through short corners but failed to convert. The game finished on a scoreline of 1-0.
Wexford will face either YMCA 1 or Genesis 2 on December 8.
