Clonroche based handler, Harley Dunne, has moved 10 horses to the UK to race on the English point-to-point circuit.
The horses have joined 24 year old, Chris Barber, grandson of the legendary Richard Barber. Tiernan Power has made the trek to the UK also, the Tomhaggard jockey will ride the horses.
Point-to-Point racing in Ireland has ceased to operate under level 5 restrictions and it looks unlikely to make a return in the foreseeable future.
Racing authorities in Ireland have shown little appetite to come up with a solution to allow racing between the Flags. In recent weeks we have seen “bumpers” run, in Wexford yesterday the complete card was made up of flat races for point-to-point horses, although running a mile less with no obstacles is hardly the answer.
Down through the years, most racecourses in Ireland would have ran point-to-points inside the main course, this was the perfect solution to see the return of points behind closed doors, but one suspects that neither HRI or the Racecourses saw any monetary value in this. Yesterday’s point-to-point bumper meeting in Wexford would have seen the track benefit to the tune of almost 60,000 euro.
