In another positive development for Rosslare Europort, Deputy Verona Murphy has welcomed news that DFDS will be adding an additional ship to their Rosslare to Dunkerque route.
Deputy Murphy explained that latest developments “Due to the unprecedented demand on Direct route service’s from Rosslare Europort DFDS have brought on a freighter to sail twice weekly to Dunkerque, this will see unaccompanied trailers landed in Europe 12 hours earlier than the quickest lo-lo option.”
In a statement DFDS say that the ship will take unaccompanied trailers, and therefore release more space on existing ships for more driver accompanied units adding greater capacity and frequency.
In reacting to this news Deputy Murphy said “We have gone from a situation where only 4 months ago, Government Ministers were arguing that no extra capacity was needed in Rosslare. Since then, we have seen an increase in capacity of almost 500%, and still we have companies adding more sailings to cater for demand”
Deputy Murphy also communicated that preparations must be made for when private car travel resumes to normal levels “This ship can accommodate 12 drivers also, adding further to roll on -roll off capacity and is very welcome. The pandemic won’t last forever, we must prepare for tourist travel on these routes, and ensure they don’t discommode commercial freight because of lack of space.”
The Independent TD concluded by saying “government must now give much needed funds for a case study for an off shore wind construction base, a study will take 2 years to complete so time is of the absolute essence for Rosslare. I continue to work hard for the ongoing development of Rosslare Europort and its environs to ensure Rosslare reaches its full potential as Irelands most strategic port. Building confidence in Rosslare will bring investment and investment will brings jobs”
