GREYHOUND RACING- Round 2 of the RED MILLS from Enniscorthy

A good crowd turned up to the Ross Road circuit for the second round heats of the Connolly’s RED MILLS Easter Unraced Stake.

The fastest time of the night came in heat three, the Martin Fortune trained Ninja Burgess, led from trap to line to record 29.08. The winner is a litter comrade to last years “Future Champion”, Burgess Brandy and according to the trainer a trip to the English Derby may well be on the agenda.

John Boyle of Boylesports was on hand to view his recent purchase, Boylesports Boom; last week’s eyecatcher made no mistake as he scored an all the way success to win in 29.16.

Niamh Murphy’s, Ballinabola Mia, employed similar front running tactics to last week, as she won the opening heat in 29.45; one hundredth of a second faster than her opening round victory.

Willie Finn, Portlaw, took second and third place in last year’s competition and he won the second heat with Geniune Blake in 29.36; another trap to line success.

Fawn Tango, owned by George Roche, Barntown, led rounding the opening bend to score in 29.35.

Roaming Hero, trained by Peter Cronin, was quickly into his stride to claim the final heat in 29.70.

The quarter finals of the stake will be run on Easter Sunday night.

Having watched the six second round heats in the stake its worth pointing out,

  1. Trap 4 was responsible for 3 winners, trap 3 supplied 2 winners, and trap 5 gave us one winner, that means that traps 1, 2 and 6 failed to win a race.

  2. All of the dogs that ran from trap 4 all qualified for the next round, and 5 of the 6 dogs that raced from trap 1 and trap 3 went through to the quarter finals.

  3. Only 1 of the 6 dogs that ran from trap 6 made it through to the quarter finals.

  4. Enniscorthy was once renowned as a staying track; this seems to be no longer the case as none of the heats produced a dog that “came from behind

  5. The question on everyone’s lips is, why is there such a bias against dogs running from trap 6 in 525 yard races in Enniscorthy? I just wonder if the sand is looser on the outside of the track, is it possible the dogs from 6 have to run in deeper sand? Any opinions?
