Charlie Christopher- St Martins & Ferns

Charlie Christopher was born in 1937 and was educated at Ferns N.S..

His Boyhood Hero was – Ned Wheeler.

During his career, he played with St. Martin’s, Ferns and Ferns, St.Aidan’s. In his usual position, at centre halfback, he played on some of the best centre half forwards in the Junior Hurling grade.

He was never overawed by any of his opponents, no matter what kind of reputation they may have brought with them to the game. He had great confidence in his own ability and played every game with courage, determination and confidence. He was exceptionally gifted to make good clearances from the tightest of close situations.

Charlie was strong and fearless and was unyielding in his duties to keep his team in the game. His willingness to go through fire and water for his team had to be admired.

One of his finest games playing with St. Martin’s, Ferns was vs Liam Mellows in the 1964 Gorey District Junior Hurling Final in the replay.

He was absolutely indestructible in this encounter. His balance, his control, and his alertness were noteworthy. His wonderful positional sense and his complete covering of his territory made him stand out on the day.

The most difficult opponents he played against were – Thompson Byrne (Liam Mellows), Oliver Cullen, Eamon O’Neill (Askamore) R.I.P. and Bill Doran (Buffers Alley).

The St. Martin’s, Ferns Hurlers that stood out in Charlie’s opinion were – Thomas Carter R.I.P., Paddy Roche, Paddy Brosnan, Jimmy Kearney, Seamie Byrne, and George Skelton.

The best dual players he has seen in Wexford were – Phil Wilson (Ballyhogue), Martin Quigley and Tom Neville (Ger. O’Han’s) R.I.P..

Tom Guinan was the best dual player he has seen in Ferns.

One of the best club teams he has seen in Wexford Hurling was the – Buffers Alley Team – in the 70’s and 80’s.

In Football, the – Castletown team – from 1965 to the end of the 70’s were brilliant.

The greatest Footballers he has seen were – Gerry O’Malley R.I.P. (Roscommon), Mick O’Dwyer (Kerry), Jack O’Shea (Kerry) Peter Canavan (Tyrone) and Colm Cooper (Kerry).

In Wexford, he selects – Paddy Kehoe R.I.P., Willie Goodison R.I.P., Joe O’Neill R.I.P. and Pat Plummer (Ferns) – as tops.

One of the greatest performances he has seen at Club Level was – Mick Christie (Sligo). His display playing for – Ferns vs Gusserane – in the mid 50’s in the Senior Football Championship was superb.

Two of the greatest Footballers he has seen were – Mick O’Connell (Kerry) and Gerry O’Malley (Roscommon) R.I.P..

The greatest Hurler he has seen was – Nickey Rackard R.I.P.. The four greatest Hurlers he has seen in Wexford in the last 40 years were – Tony Doran, David Bernie, Matt Browne and Michael Kennedy (Ferns).

The greatest players he has seen outside of Wexford were – Jimmy Doyle R.I.P., Mick Roche R.I.P., D.J. Carey, Henry Shefflin and Frank Cummins.

The two best full-backs he has seen were – Nick O’Donnell R.I.P. and Pat Hartigan.

The two best Midfielders he has seen were – Ned Wheeler and Joe Salmon R.I.P..

The two best full forwards he has seen were – Nickey Rackard R.I.P. and Tony Doran.

Charlie played Juvenile and Minor Hurling with Ferns. He won – 1 Co. Junior Special Medal with Ferns in 1966.

His two grandsons – Gerard Breen and Michael Sunderland – played the game too. Gerard played with – Ferns – and Michael played with – Buffers Alley. His granddaughter – Mairead Breen plays with Ferns and his two sons – Charles and Walter – also played the game brilliantly.
