Glenanne 4
Enniscorthy 3
Enniscorthy’s men’s first eleven traveled to Tallaght in west Dublin on Saturday to take on Glenanne in their refixed Division 4 game after Storm Ciara called a halt to the previous weekend’s scheduled fixture.
The game started with the Dubliners putting their visitors under pressure with a high tempo and physical game plan but Enniscorthy stayed strong in defence and were not going to give in easily. It took a while for the travelling team to gain a foothold in Glenanne’s half, but when they did they were under pressure with Dunne to the fore for Enniscorthy.
Hogan made a break in the first quarter with the ‘keeper fouling him inside the circle resulting in a penalty stroke being awarded to the Wexford men. Having won the stroke Hogan stood up and slotted it past the diving keeper.
The Wexford men knew they were under pressure and knew it was going to take a few more goals to get something from the game as a string of penalty corners were awarded to the home side, but Hill and his defence of Simmons, Doyle, Ivan Rothwell and Andrew Rothwell stayed strong.
Midway through the second quarter, Enniscorthy doubled their lead when they were awarded a penalty corner, where William Durnan hit a powerful ball through the Dubliner’s onrushing defence, hitting the back board. However, this didn’t deter the home side who shortly after scored from their own penalty corner despite a scrambled defence attempt by the visitors. And just on the stroke of half time, they equalised after a penalty stroke was awarded.
It was going to be a big half with both teams putting everything into it in what was a blustery day in Dublin. The second half was played at a higher tempo as both teams went in search of a third goal. The home side would strike first as a player was left free at the back post, 3-2 Glenanne. The visitors didn’t shy away and were awarded a penalty corner which Seb Rynhart leveled things up once again with a deflection shot past the ‘keeper. It was all square at the start of the 4th quarter with both team making breaks and causing their respective opposition problems, but it was the home side that went on to score the only goal of the last quarter and they held on to the dismay of the visitors.
It was a great game between two strong sides with the host side taking all three points on the day, securing second place in the table just ahead of Enniscorthy.
