Report by Dan Walsh at Ballycrystal, Kiltealy; It was cold, but dry and bright this afternoon as a small group were busy preparing for the first ever point-to-point at Ballycrystal, near Kiltealy, which takes place on Sunday with the first of six races off at 12.30 pm.
Racing enthusiasts are always excited when a new track comes into operation and the Ballycrystal location is quite picturesque nesting on the side of a hill shielded by the Blackstairs and Mount Leinster with exquisite views into central Co. Wexford.
The fixture is organised by the Ballinagore Harriers, established in 2014, and the races will take place over lands kindly loaned to the hunt by local handler Matthew Flynn O’Connor and his family.
Racing will take place over three circuits of well grassed turf with two long straights and a downhill run and an uphill climb at opposite ends. The going is expected to be “good, yielding in places” and despite the heavy rain that fell in recent days the track has been aerated.
