Enniscorthy M1 win in goal-fest

Enniscorthy 5
Dublin University 3

Enniscorthy’s men’s first eleven continued their good run of form with another 3 points against Dublin University on Saturday.

The supporters at the Astro Active Centre in Enniscorthy were treated to something of a goal-fest with eight goals between the two sides. The Wexford men were the first to strike with a goal from Seb Rynhart within the first five minutes of the game. And they doubled their lead just moments later when William Durnan put a pinpoint cross into Rynhart who doubled his tally for the game. Despite the home side’s early form the Dublin side began to put pressure on Hill’s goal. Their first goal of the game come on the eleven-minute mark. The next goal went to the home side who just before the first quarter ended scored through Leo Durnan after a cross to the back post from Charlie Dunne.

With the first quarter over it was 3-1 to the home side but Hill and his men knew the Dublin side were more than capable of getting a few goals. The second quarter was end to end action but with no further scores.

The second half started with the visitors putting pressure on the South East side’s goal but the defence of Simmons, Doran, Ivan Rothwell and Andrew Rothwell were up to the challenge. However, the hosts scored the first of the second half against the run of play when Enniscorthy broke quickly and Earl Smith made it 4-1. The third quarter ended with the home side in a very strong position with a three-goal lead. It wasn’t over just yet though.

Durnan and Dunne reversed positions in the Wexford men’s next goal when Dunne scored after linking up with Leo Durnan. The visitors weren’t giving up and just two minutes later scored their second of the game and the continued the remainder of the game in search of a comeback. They scored their third just four minutes later and there was still time for them to salvage something from the game. However, to the relief of their supporters and thanks to a resilient Enniscorthy defence and the midfield line O’Leary, Doyle, Durnan and Rynhart they saw the game out 5-3 winners.

Enniscorthy now set their sights on a busy weekend ahead as they welcome Glenanne this Saturday in the league and in Intermediate Cup action they play host to North Kildare on Sunday.
