Each day we will have a round-up of successful Wexford connections at the Cheltenham festival. The second last race of the day saw Wexford jockey Sean Flanagan steer home his first ever festival winner.
At odds of 80/1, Flanagan partnered the Noel Meade trained ‘Jeff Kidder’ to win the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle.
See replay of the finish below:
Flanagan from Palace East originally, took over as Meade’s number 1 jockey following the retirement of Paul Carberry. He also currently lies 3rd in the Irish jump jockey’s championship behind Paul Townend and Rachel Blackmore.
Uniquely, Flanagan piloted himself in his own plane to Cheltenham this week, having acquired a pilot’s licence in recent times.

Elsewhere on the card, the first race, the Supreme Novices hurdle was won by the Willie Mullins trained ‘Appreciate It’, who started his racing career in a point-to-point in Ballinaboola in February 2018, when he finished 3rd to Envoi Allen. Jockey Daryl Jacob looked set for a second place finish aboard Blue Lord, until an unfortunate fall at the last spoiled that result.
Next on the card was the Arkle, which was won by the Nicky Henderson trained Shishkin, who began his winning at a point to point in Lingstown in late 2018.
