The Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI), the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the practise of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing, has launched a guidance booklet for veterinary nurses entitled ‘The Role and Scope of Practice of the Veterinary Nurse’. The publication was developed as a tool to provide clarity and guidance on the roles and responsibilities of a Veterinary Nurse, as well as provide practical guidance and support for members of the veterinary nursing profession.

There are currently 1,083 veterinary nurses registered with the Veterinary Council, accounting for more than a quarter of all VCI registrants. The guidance booklet is part of the Council’s strategic objective to support and develop the role of the veterinary nurse.

The publication examines areas of key importance for veterinary nurses, the Veterinary Council’s list of competencies for veterinary nurses; and guidance on when vets can delegate tasks to nurses. The publication also contains case studies on important areas including dispensing prescription-only vaccinations, dealing with difficult clients, and grooming, as well as frequently asked questions on topics such as vaccinations, blood procedures, and minor surgeries.

Niamh Muldoon, CEO and Registrar of the Veterinary Council of Ireland said,

“Veterinary nurses play a vital role in the provision of veterinary care to sick and injured animals in Ireland. We hope that this booklet proves to be an insightful educational resource and enables the public to gain a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of a veterinary nurse.

I would also like to commend all of our registrants for the vital work they have carried out as essential services and the excellent standards of care maintained during the COVID-19 pandemic”.

A copy of the veterinary nursing guidance booklet will be sent to every veterinary nurse and veterinary practitioner on the Veterinary Council Register. A soft copy will also be made available on the VCI website.
