In an emotional exchange in the Dáil this evening, Verona Murphy TD raised a very serious and upsetting issue with Minister Anne Rabbitte.
The issue is in relation to the HSE in the South East, adopting a new structure for carers, which has seen many people with disabilities having their usual carers removed and replaced with just 48 hours notice.
People with profound intellectual disabilities often rely on routine and familiarity. Carers develop a close relationship and understanding of their patients needs. In a time when so many of the disability services have been disrupted due to Covid19, news that a long-standing carer is being moved elsewhere will come as a further blow to families.
In the exchange, Minister Anne Rabbitte recognises the seriousness of the problem and commits to addressing it.
Even the Ceann Chomhairle, who usually offers no opinion on the content of speeches, added his concerns at the proposed changes.
