Wexford TD Sinn Féin’s Johnny Mythen has stood up for County Wexford taxi drivers in the Dáil, supporting a Sinn Féin motion calling for protections for the industry.
Speaking after the motion Deputy Mythen said,
“Taxi drivers are an essential part of transport infrastructure in rural constituencies like Wexford, and it was this key point that I raised with my colleagues in the Dáil.”
“Taxi men and women in rural areas are the bone and sinew of the community. They break the cycle of rural isolation for many lonely people.”
“It is taxi drivers that many older constituents in smaller villages like Askamore, Ballindaggin, Murrintown, Clonroche, Ballycullanne, to name but a few, that provide the only link to the G.A.A. grounds, shops, post offices, the GP, or the local pub.”
“This motion calls for a financial assistance package to help ordinary hard-working Taxi drivers get back to work and allow them to continue to provide the essential link in the mobility chain for their communities, and it asks that a new approach be taken, in terms of engagement and oversight of the industry.”
“These are not unsurmountable requests. They are moderate in nature, asking only for what is needed to survive.”
“I value the contribution that taxi drivers make to keep the tight knit local communities and villages across Co. Wexford connected, and I believe we should act now, to give them the support they deserve.”
“That is why I was proud to speak in support of this motion on behalf of County Wexford taxi drivers in the Dáil”
