Enniscorthy has a Litter Problem

It is becoming increasingly obvious, that there are significant problems with littering and dealing with litter in the town of Enniscorthy.

It is a very regular sight to see bins full to the brim and often overflowing with all sorts of litter, particularly at weekends.

The regular litter problems leads to some questions. Are people using these bins to discard of household waste? Are there enough bins or large enough bins in busy areas? Are the bins emptied often enough? Are people being caught and punished for littering? Are punishments severe enough?

Another particular black-spot in terms of litter is the area around the market square. It seems that some people are inclined to use the steps there to sit down and eat take-aways, with the packaging often left behind on the steps.

The irony of the above photograph is that the litter is left scattered around the square, only yards from two bins, which can been seen in the top left quarter of the photo. Any regular visitor to the market square will know that this is an all too regular sight.

Hopefully in highlighting this issue, the relevant authorities can address the problem, particularly when the market square area is likely to be pedestrianised for restaurants and pubs to use. It is important have our town looking as neat and tidy as possible for the benefit of locals and to create a good impression on visitors.

  1. This is hardly news. As you say it’s particularly galling that people sit feet away from bins but still leave their litter strewn about the place. The expensive new bins like the thing in the Market Square are a disaster – especially along the river – as once a few large items are jammed in the opening nothing else can be added and just gets chucked on the ground or in the river.
