Mussel & Shellfish boats must be Included

Co. Wexford Sinn Fein TD Johnny Mythen has written to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, to urge the inclusion of this industry in the scheme, an industry which is valued at 150 million euro in both internal and export revenue, as well as the support of over 1800 Irish jobs, spread over 14 counties.

Teachta Mythen said:

“The Voluntary Fleet Support Scheme, funded by the EU, is badly needed for our fishing industry, but we must go one step further, and ensure the inclusion of boats licensed for Aquaculture, ie mussels and shellfish, in this scheme. Our own Wexford Harbour is renowned for Mussel Dredging, and this support is vital to ensure the sustainability of this local industry.”

“This pandemic has created challenges in all industries, and each industry requires unique and individual supports, based on industry knowledge. After engaging with our local fishermen and women, I am convinced that this support is vital to the survival of this industry. Our Aquaculture fleet must be protected, to allow these men and women maintain their livelihoods into the future, and give them the much-needed confidence to continue to farm Irish produce for consumers, both here at home and the valuable exports we send around the world.”
