Gorey 2
Gorey came away with the win in their first match of the weekend on Saturday. The away game against Botanic 3rd in Glasnevin was a fast-paced, high-pressure match.
Gorey started strong, attacking from the start. This resulted in a goal within the first 8 minutes. The ball came down the right-wing, passed to Muireann Deegan who took it from the 25, dribbled past the defenders and knocked it neatly into the goal.
Gorey settled into the match in the second quarter, maintaining pressure, however, several shots went wide. Quick playing frees straight up the left from Vicky Hughes to Robyn Swords and Aislinn Buttle saw great teamwork in action.
By the end of the first half, the score was still 1-0 to Gorey. In the third quarter, a lot of left feet saw Botanic get a sequence of five short corners. These were defended by Jill Stephens, Gillian Bailey, Bridget Kenny, and Ruth Evans. The ball was pressed from the backs, up to Muireann on the right who brought it to the top of the circle, passed it to Sadhbh Corcoran who scored the second goal.
In the fourth quarter, Botanic put serious pressure on Gorey. There was fast play and tactical use of the full pitch. Goalie Abi Nuzum even had to make a save. Gorey held strong and came away with the 2-0 win.
