Over 300 students swapped their school books for their welly boots when they took part in Agri Aware’s Farm Walk and Talk sustainability event in Teagasc Gurteen Agricultural College, Co Tipperary on Monday, March 2.
The event series which takes place until March 13 focuses on the sustainability of Irish agriculture and allows students gain a practical insight into Irish farming through a range of hands-on visits to Teagasc farms, UCD Lyons Farm and the Irish Farmer’s Journal Farm.
Speaking at the Farm Walk and Talk event, Agri Aware Executive Director Marcus O’Halloran said:
“There are a lot of myths out there about Irish farming and food production but though these events students will get an accurate insight into what a real working farm is like while learning about key topics and information that are relevant to the Leaving Cert course.”
“We all would be lost without agriculture as without it we wouldn’t have food or clothing.”
“There will always be an agriculture industry in Ireland so it is worth considering a career in agriculture today even if this is your first time stepping foot on a farm as it is a diverse industry with lots of opportunities and almost 170,000 people employed in the sector in Ireland.”
