Gorey Cycle Club is promoting the Gorey 3-Day International Easter Cycle Races over three days of the Easter Weekend which will result in a reinvigorated weekend with extra races, additional routes and some of the action returning to Gorey’s Main Street.
This is the first time in the 66-year history of the event that the Irish Road Club will not be promoting this popular sporting event which costs in the region of €15,000 to host.
Race Director Derek Webb told WexfordToday.com that the race was running at a loss for the last number of years and he has stepped in to keep it going with the help of fellow members from Gorey Cycling Club.
“I am hoping to get riders from Scotland, Wales, the UK and France. We have also opened it up to ladies as well and they will be racing for their pink leaders’ jersey. The race will have 185 riders in total ride the 300km over three days,” said Mr Webb who is a founder member of Gorey CC.
“The race will be changed this year to help with its long-term future in mind. The cost entry will be €75. And the whole event will take place in and around Gorey. There will be three road stages. The TT will be cancelled for this year, but like that the race will be reviewed every year to try keep it fresh and exciting.
“There are a few changes to the event as in off course there will be a yellow jersey for the overall race leader. A pink jersey for the leader in the ladies’ race, a navy jersey for the leader in the Juniors and a red jersey for the leaders in the A3 category.
“We are excited about having a ladies’ race also, this will be run on a handicap system to the main race, but like that they will have a separate leaders jersey for the overall lead and the Queen Of the Hill. We hope this will help more ladies into the sport of cycling and give them more of a choice to race with at Easter.”
The prestigious 3-day Gorey International cycling events will take place in Gorey on April 11th, 12th and 13th.
