Enniscorthy’s ladies first XI continued their Division 5/6 Cup campaign on Saturday afternoon at the Astro Active Centre when they hosted Trinity College in the quarter-final.

Eager to progress toward silverware, the home side started strongly, working the ball up the right side of the pitch. Midfielders Niamh Ogilvie, Ciara Kelly and forward Isobelle Walsh linked well to work the ball into the circle and put early pressure on the visitors. A penalty corner was awarded to the home side early on, which they were unlucky not to convert.

Attacks continued up the left side of the pitch with Rebecca Ogilvie linking well with Deané Lodewyks and Leah Kidd in centre. The defence – Anna Flood, Julie Watchorn, Laura Smith and Leah Chapman -held off any counter-attacks by the visitors with goalkeeper Norah McGinty making necessary saves.

Enniscorthy’s first goal resulted from a penalty corner which was finished by Niamh Ogilvie with support from Laura Smith and Ciara Kelly. The Slaneysiders added a second to the scoreboard with a combined effort during a penalty corner with Kidd getting the final touch.

The second quarter saw the Students win a penalty corner, and duly converted. The Division 6 league leaders responded in the last quarter with a goal from Lodewyks following great play up the left side of the pitch. The game finished 3-1 to the home side.

Enniscorthy face Avoca 3rds away in the semi-final of the Cup on 8th March. Saturday sees the side return to league action and a crucial encounter as Enniscorthy host second-placed Our Lady’s at noon at the Astro Active Centre.
