Wexford’s U-14 teams in action

Sunday saw both Wexford U14 Teams in action. Wexford U14 (2nd years) travelled to Rathfarnham for their Leinster Minor league game against Loreto HC. Fine bright weather and a super new water-based Astro pitch made for a good game. Wexford started well and dominated possession attacking strongly up both flanks.

The Wexford forward trio of Sass Thompson, Josie Mullen and Anna Sinnott made great runs. Despite all the possession, it was Loreto who scored first on a rare counter-attack. Wexford weren’t deterred and Sophie O’Leary equalised with a great strike from the top of the circle. Late in the first half Loreto scored another from a fast break with Roisin Alouf in the Wexford goal very unlucky not to keep out the shot.

Wexford started the second half on top, in possession and battling hard making the Loreto defence work hard to keep their lead. Wexford’s pressure was rewarded when a great cross from the left to Anna Sinnott on the right post allowed her to slip the ball past the Loreto keeper to level the game.

Wexford continued to work hard to try and secure all three points but the score finished 2-2.

Sunday afternoon saw Wexford 1st Years host Old Alex in Enniscorthy. The result, a nil-all draw, sees Wexford remain unbeaten in the league.

Wexford’s defence with Sinead Cullen in goal ably supported by Grace O’Connor and Kate Stafford were excellent and kept Old Alex scoreless despite some very good moves from the opposition. The Wexford midfield players worked tirelessly and Emma O Leary at centre mid proved to be a handful for the visiting side. All Wexford forwards had lots of chances and were unlucky not to score. The result ensures Wexford a place in the league semi-final.
