“Downgrading of Gorey Garda Station foolish”; Mythen

Sinn Fein General Election candidate Johnny Mythen has reacted to yesterday’s much publicised events in the Craanford area of North Wexford where shots were discharged at a garda patrol unit who were investigating a serious incident.

Mr Mythen told WexfordToday.com; “This incident highlights once again why the foolish downgrading of Gorey Garda District must be reversed; garda numbers restored to adequate levels and a properly-resourced and expanded Drugs Unit for the North Wexford area. When the government downgraded Gorey Garda Station, it also left fewer Gardaí based in the Gorey area.

Courtown station was closed despite some major crime lords moving from Dublin to North Wexford, particularly to the coastal areas. Over recent years we’ve had CAB raids in the Gorey area and a heroin and cocaine problem thats spiralling out of control. Garda resources must be prioritised as a matter of urgency.”

When Commissioner Harris decided to amalgamate the Wexford and Wicklow Divisions, which will be implemented this year, he promised that there will be a “more visible, localised and responsive policing service.” I really hope we’ll see action and proper resourcing”
