The first point-to-point of 2020 went off today at Lisgoold, Co. Cork, and with no four year old contests the Wexford entry was low, but 53 of the 64 entries that stood their ground it was an enjoyable day’s racing in heavy and cold conditions and Wexford riders Barry O’Neill and Rob James managed a winner apiece.
Kiltealy rider Rob James rode his 10th winner of the season on the gelding On Call, trained at Kiltrea, Enniscorthy, by Shay Slevin for his wife, Liz, in the ‘older’ maiden race with four lengths to spare. On Call had four runs on the track and after this success the connections hope that he can return to the track.
Barry O’Neill teamed up with Jim Dreaper in the six-year-old geldings’ maiden race where newcomer Mr Bercow recorded a three lengths success.
Point-to-point action returns to the south-east next Sunday when the annual Shillelagh & District Hunt races take place at Fairwood, Tinahely. The first of six races are off at 12.30 pm. The card includes an Open Lightweight Race, a Winner of One confined to novice riders, and four maiden events for five and six-year-old mares, five and six-year-old geldings, mares of seven years plus and geldings of seven years plus. An excellent day’s sport is anticipated and the organising committee deserve a good attendance at this popular track.
