Enniscorthy L2 win on the road

Trinity 1
Enniscorthy 3

A 3-1 win over Trinity College cemented the ladies seconds fourth-placed position in Division 11 ahead of the Christmas break at Santry on Saturday.

The match roared to an evenly-matched start, but the Cathedral Town side soon had the upper hand. After some excellent offensive work, Megan Dempsey popped the ball past the Trinity goalkeeper, to give the Slaneysiders an early lead in the first half. Kate Freeman’s senior debut proved to be an excellent one, saving three penalty corners from a hard-hitting Trinity side. Dervla Walsh scored two goals, with balls fed into the circle numerous times by the speedy forward division of Martha Dunne, Laura Sutton, and Lisa Frayne. Sharp passing from the midfield kept the visitor’s lead intact. Fatigue started to show a little in an energetic first half, as the TCD side managed to sneak one past Freeman. However, huge defensive efforts seemed to pay off, and College were denied any more goals.

After the half time interval, the second half proved to be a greatly contrasting one. A dramatic turn of events, however, saw Trinity awarded a late penalty corner. It was to be the last ball of the match. Defenders running from the goal braced themselves for what was sure to be a mighty effort from the hosts. Through sheer determination, a strong shot was stopped on the stick of Aine O’Brien, and fed into the wings to Kelly Robinson. A sharp pass up the left side to Walsh proved to be the final movements of a high-octane match, as the referee blew the final whistle, leaving Enniscorthy the winners.

This win sees the side firmly in the chasing pack behind league leaders Portrane and Muckross, both on 19 points, with Trinity on fourteen and Enniscorthy and Botanic both on twelve. Bray visit the Astro Active Centre on January 11th in the first match after the Christmas break.
