Enniscorthy L1 top the table

Trinity 0
Enniscorthy 6

A cold Saturday evening saw Enniscorthy’s ladies firsts take on an unbeaten Trinity side in Santry, and produced an emphatic 6-0 win to claim the summit of Division 6 for the Christmas break.

The match started late due to a hold up with matches before but this didn’t seem to faze the Slaneysiders as they started quickly. After good work around the middle with Ciara Kelly and Leah Chapman, a long ball sent into the circle by Laura Smith bobbled about until Deané Lodewyks grabbed control before placing the ball low into the corner of the Trinity net despite the goalkeeper getting her stick to it.

The foundations for the Enniscorthy success came from the back with great defensive work by Julie Watchorn, Jessie Flood , Laura Smith and Aine O’Brien. Indeed, Enniscorthy’s second goal came courtesy of the defensive unit, soon after an attack by Trinity which broke down. A long clearance then found Isabelle Walsh who gave a smart pass into Lodewyks, who finished superbly into the top corner.

At the start of the second quarter Enniscorthy continued the pressure up front with Lisa Frayne, Martha Dunne and Walsh all working hard. This pressure finally paid off when Lisa Frayne won a penalty corner after a pass from Aoife Mahon. Ciara Kelly injected the short corner to Frayne and the hard shot was deflected into the goal by the former. Soon after Kelly got her second goal when a pass from Lisa Frayne set Kelly up again and she finished to corner of the net. Enniscorthy finished the half four goals up.

At the start of the second half Trinity began to come more into the game more but Enniscorthy’s defence and Norah McGinty in goal remained strong. Enniscorthy only gave away one penalty corner throughout the game – in the third quarter- and they made sure the Dublin side came away empty handed. After this penalty corner Enniscorthy attacked and scored through Walsh, a low, hard shot to the left of the goalkeeper leaving her with no chance, giving Enniscorthy a 5-0 lead going into the final quarter.

In the final quarter the tempo of the game slowed as Trinity began to come off the pace, Niamh Rochford, though, scoring a brilliant goal to finish off a great win for Enniscorthy.
