Gorey worked hard against Botanic for an entire match before securing the winning goal in the final quarter.

It started off in the first quarter with good pressure from Gorey. Sadhbh Corcoran had the first shot on goal but it was a near miss. Muireann Deegan then secured Gorey’s first short corner after a fantastic run up the centre. Aislinn Buttle pushed it out to Ailbhe Booth who went for goal but it went wide. Aislinn secured a second short corner, Sarah Merrigan secured a third but each failed to deliver a goal. The Botanic goalie delivered successive saves when Muireann and Heather O’Sullivan both took shots on goal in quick succession.

Quarter two started with what Gorey thought was a goal from Heather, but it was disallowed by the referee. Pressure from Botanic was well defended, particularly by Bridget Kenny on the left who got a whack of the ball on her forehead. Nice passing from Gillian Bailey to Odile Evans and up to Muireann on the right saw a reverse stick attempt on goal that went wide. The free out was well blocked by Ruth Evans down the centre.

After half time a good run from Gillian and Muireann saw Gorey secure their fourth short corner but it failed to deliver a goal. The fifth short corner was secured by Sadhbh which delivered another short when the ball hit a defender’s foot. The sixth short, secured by Muireann, also failed to deliver the goal.

The final quarter started at nil-all. Good passing between Gorey players saw Aislinn take a shot on goal but it was once again saved by the keeper. After great passes between Ailbhe and Muireann, Gorey secured another short corner. Then a great run passing from Aislinn to Ailbhe to Aislinn to Muireann saw Gorey score a goal, at last, 12 mins and 30 seconds into the final quarter. Great defence from Vicky Hughes and a few runs up the wing from Sadhbh failed to secure another goal but saw Gorey walk away with a league topping win.
