Enniscorthy is one of four greyhound tracks set for closure following today’s release of an independent report undertaken by Indecon Economic Consultants and such a drastic decision would result in job losses and create a significant impact on the local economy.
The grassroots of the industry in the county is shocked, stunned, saddened, and angry at today’s news. Racing takes place twice weekly on Monday and Thursday and approximately a quarter of a million euro is paid out in prizemoney annually.
Thoughts of closure seems a bizarre decision as the Irish Greyhound Board spent almost €50,000 on the kennels during the summer!
Some of the best greyhounds ever to have raced had their origins here, it was a nursery for many classic winners at home and in the UK, and local breeders had a revolutionary influence on the sport/industry worldwide.
The local track ran its first race on August 3rd August 1933, since then the track has been very much part of the Wexford’s sporting and social culture and raised millions of euro in local charity and benefit night’s for local clubs and organisations down through the years.
There is hardly a voluntary group or charitable organisation across the county who have not had a fund-raising Race Night dedicated to worthy projects and community-based programmes.
