After a disappointing one all draw away to Loreto Beaufort last week in the league, the teams met again this week in the Cup.

Gorey started the game much stronger and took control of the game from the push back. Gorey controlled the first half and had some great runs up the wings from Robyn Swords on the left and Heather O’ Sullivan on the right. Loreto made a few early attacks on the Gorey goal but they were shut down before they got anywhere near Abigail Nuzum in the Gorey goal. Just before the quarter ended, Muireann Deegan made a run from inside her own half, beating the Loreto defence before scoring Gorey’s first goal.

After good work from Odile Evans, Ruth Evans and Vicky Hughes in the backs, Gorey broke up the pitch again in the second quarter. Following some nice one-two passes between Bridget Kenny and Ailbhe Booth the ball was crossed into Sarah Merrigan on the spot and she slotted home Gorey’s second goal. Muireann Deegan got her second goal just before half time after a lovely weighted pass from Sarah Merrigan.

In the third quarter, Loreto tried to soak up the constant pressure from Gorey and eventually conceded a short corner. After a quick, accurate push out from Robyn Swords, Sarah Merrigan switched the ball to the left and Aislinn Buttle was on hand to sweep the ball into the corner of the Loreto goal.

In the final quarter, Loreto took out their goalkeeper and played with eleven outfield players. Despite this Loreto failed to have a shot on the Gorey goal. Gorey finished out the game with another goal from Sarah Merrigan and two from Muireann Deegan. Gorey will meet Genesis in Round 3 of the Cup.
