An iconic landmark on the once sprawling Wilton Castle estate of 2,000 acres, the giant oak tree standing proudly outside the stately Wilton Gardens has succumbed to longevity and toppled over bringing a section of the high wall with it. It recently lost its arrangement with gravity during stormy conditions.
Located on the road from Borodale to Bree, the tree was likely planted in the 1840s, opposite the entrance to the castle, and has been a prominent landmark for generations of families travelling this road. Many a weary traveller sheltered there during a heavy summer shower!
This is a broken link with the past, much of which is still preserved in this tranquil area between Parkwood and Bree Hill, Wilton Gardens is currently providing fresh fruit and vegetables to the local markets and was designed as garden for the castle family of Alcock substantial landlords with an estate consisting of 7,346 acres in their care in 1878.
Wilton Castle was maliciously burned on March 5th 1923 and lay in ruins for many years. Part of the castle has been renovated and converted into accommodation and BBQ facilities in a beautiful natural landscape beside the River Boro.
