In a busy weekend for the mens first XI in Enniscorthy, they took on North Kildare in a Leinster Intermediate Cup tie at the Astro Active Centre in Bellefield on Sunday afternoon.

The home side started strongly, putting pressure on the visitor’s defence. But the Kildare side didn’t take long to get their first chance of the game when they forced Hill in the Enniscorthy goal into making a save with Hogan, Rynhart and Andrew Rothwell combining to clear the danger. It was end to end action and Dunne came close to scoring when he combined with Leo Durnan, but his shot was cleared off the line to the disappointment of the home side’s vocal support. Just before the break of the first quarter, Enniscorthy were awarded two penalty corners in quick succession but the visiting ‘keeper was up to the challenge and cleared his lines. It was just before the half time break before the deadlock was broken when Enniscorthy were pushing hard and with some accurate passing worked the ball from defenders Simmons and Ivan Rothwell, to Rynhart before Maguire scored.

The second half continued with end to end action with both sets of defenders being kept busy, but both were successful in not conceding in the second half. It was a full team effort by the Wexford men to see out the game as winners and they did just that as they battled a skilful and physical side. Niall Maguire’s first-half goal was enough to see Enniscorthy through to the next round of the cup where they will travel to Dublin University early in the new year.

After what was a busy weekend, Enniscorthy will set their focus on a trip to south Dublin this Saturday where they will take on Corinthians in Division 4 of the Leinster league.
