Enniscorthy L2 win on the road

Lisa Frayne scored twice for Enniscorthy

Rathgar 0
Enniscorthy 6

On a wet Saturday afternoon, Enniscorthy’s ladies second XI travelled to the High School to play Rathgar, who began the contest just one place above the Wexford side, close to the bottom of Division 11.

The visitors started strongly with lots of passing and good movement on the ball. The first goal came from a series of passes, with Caoimhe Larkin linking up with Ciara Murphy who found Freyne who put the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Soon after the score was doubled with a reverse stick strike from Murphy.

In the second quarter, the positive passing and movement continued from the visitors. It wasn’t long until Enniscorthy found the net again with a pass from Neville to Kelly which found Martha Dunne. Enniscorthy maintained the pressure, winning a number of penalty corners but excellent defending from Rathgar kept the score at 3-0 at the half time break.

Lisa Freyne added to her already impressive goal tally for the season in the third quarter with a high flying goal to the right of the ‘keeper. The visitors pressed on, winning a penalty corner and it was converted by Dunne to make the score 5-0. Although the forwards were getting all the credit it was the tenacious defending from Ailbhe Harrington, Kelly Robinson, Amy D’Alton, Megan Dempsey and Alice Kelly kept Rathgar at bay.

A tactical adjustment – with Alice Kelly moving up into midfield – brought near-instant results as Kelly won a penalty corner which Robinson converted to bring the final score to 6-0. Overall it was a great performance from the Enniscorthy with great midfield play from Amy Murphy, Hannah Neville, Alice Kely and Caoimhe Larkin. Credit is also due to Roisin Dillon kept a clean sheet on her debut with the side.

Bottom side Pembroke Wanderers host Enniscorthy on Saturday, and a win for the Wexford women could see them enter mid-table for the first time this season.

Squad: Roisin Dillon, Amy Dalton, Kelly Robinson, Ailbhe Harrington, Alice Kelly, Megan Dempsey, Hannah Neville, Amy Murphy, Caoimhe Larkin, Martha Dunne, Lisa Frayne, Laura Sutton, Ciara Murphy
