Enniscorthy 11
Monkstown 0
Enniscorthy’s ladies first team continued their successful run in Division 6 on Saturday, claiming all three points in their sixth match of the season with a resounding 11-0 win over Monkstown at the Astro Active Centre.
A skillful Monkstown side came on the attack quickly in the opening minutes but co-captains Julie Watchorn and Laura Smith put in a series of tremendous tackles to stem the Dubliner’s tide. The Flood combination of Anna and Jessie proved very strong on the left and right-wing, which led to Jessie earning the Slaneysider’s their first penalty corner of the game where Smith was unlucky not to convert.
It wasn’t long, though, before Enniscorthy got their first goal from a well-worked penalty corner, Jessie Flood getting her name on the scoresheet. The home side were now more relaxed on the ball and plenty more goals were to follow. Following the goal, Enniscorthy were very powerful up the wings with some precise linking play between Niamh Ogilvie, Rebecca Ogilvie, May Wickham, Izzy Walsh, and Deané Lodewyks, who all proved a real danger to the Monkstown goalkeeper.
Enniscorthy kept the pressure on the opposition and the lead was doubled when Izzy Walsh set up Niamh Ogilvie with a pinpoint pass, the former Ireland under 16 triallist scoring with a tremendous effort. Watchorn and Jessie Flood sprayed a series passes out of defence to Chapman, Anna Flood, Kidd, Mahon, and Graham, who worked hard to link up with their colleagues in attack. May Wickham made many great entries into the Monkstown circle and was very unlucky not to get the ball past the Monkstown goalkeeper. Lodewyks and Rebecca Ogilvie worked very well together in the circle earning the Slaneysiders many penalty corners. Izzy Walsh then took a reverse hit shot and it flew into the back of the net earning a three-nil lead at the half time interval.
The second half proved to be a difficult one for the visiting side. Early on Monkstown proved a threat with but Norah McGinty in goal for Enniscorthy made some spectacular saves earning her a well-deserved player of the match accolade. Anna Flood, Hannah Graham, Leah Kidd and Aoife Mahon kept the pressure on the opposition giving the opportunity to Walsh and Lodewyks to get their names on the score sheet before the final quarter.
Rebecca Ogilvie completed a great day for the Ogilvie household when scoring a super goal from a shot across the circle. The skillful pairing of Kidd and Smith in the centre worked their way into the circle giving many great balls into Mahon, Lodewyks, and Walsh who got their names on the score sheet also, giving Ennsicorthy a 10-0 lead. Chapman then earned the final penalty corner of the game, which resulted in a goal from Kelly. Despite the big win, it is Our Lady’s who top the table on 16 points after thrashing Tullamore 8-0 on Saturday; the Dublin outfit are a point ahead of Enniscorthy having played a game more.
Enniscorthy now start their preparations for their first Division 5/6 Cup game of the season, taking on Genesis – their only conquerors so far this season- in the second round at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.
