One of the biggest nights of the year in Gorey is the long parade through Main Street, with heaving crowds on either side, culminating in the Big Lights Switch-On and Wexford County Council and Love Gorey in conjunction with Gorey Chamber of Commerce is delighted to have the switching on of Gorey’s Christmas Lights on Saturday, November 23rd.

The Christmas Lights Committee consisting of members of the business community, the Chamber of Commerce and Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District have worked tirelessly over the past year, holding numerous meetings to ensure the continued success of this wonderful event. The ‘Big Switch On’ is supported by many local groups including Gorey Ukes, Gorey Youth Needs, Santa’s Little Helpers from Gorey Little Theatre, Gorey Tidy Towns Committee and Gorey Men’s Shed who all assist with the entertainment and management of the event on the night.

With Mrs. Claus by his side and calling out instructions (to the reindeer), Santa will travel up Main Street in his sleigh and he will be taking orders from all the boys and girls to make sure he arrives with the right present on Christmas Eve Night. Escorting Santa are the fabulous Goldwing riders who will ensure his safe arrival to greet everyone from the stage. Prior to his arrival entertainment will be provided by Santa’s Little Helpers and a performance of some festive cheer from Gorey Ukes.

South East Radio’s Dave Redmond who will act as MC and entertainment will begin from 6.45 pm while the crowds excitedly await the arrival of Santa Claus. Entertainment in the town will continue each weekend to create festive spirt for shoppers and visitors after the ‘Big Switch On’, right up to Christmas.

This event is seen as the start of the busiest shopping season in the calendar and assists in promoting Gorey as a shopping destination. Local school children will be performing carols and adding to the festive spirit in the town. The Christmas Market is of great importance to the town of Gorey both from a retail perspective and as a community event. Throughout December there are a number of initiatives to encourage shopping in the area with the “Elf Selfie” from Gorey Chamber of Commerce, a Social Media Campaign by Love Gorey, the annual Christmas Windows Competition taking place on Saturday, December 14th and the Christmas Jumpers Competition taking place on Saturday, December 21st!
