Plenty of problems but short on solutions
Tuesday night’s “LATE DEBATE” with Wexford By-election candidates Karin Dubsky, Jim Codd, Malcolm Byrne, and George Lawlor, highlighted many problems facing Ireland as a whole such as immigration, climate change, healthcare, homelessness and the plight of the rural village, but perhaps lack of specifics relating to Co.Wexford.
Some of the issues discussed specific to Wexford included:
Rosslare rail line and Rural Transport, which was mentioned by Malcolm Byrne. The absence of a regular all-day service is something which he believes needs to be improved.
Karin Dubsky also mentioned the potential for Rosslare railway lines to be used more for rail freight transport as a more environmentally friendly option rather than hauling every container to the port by road.
Jim Codd raised a very interesting point about subsidising local fishermen to collect discarded waste plastics in our seas.
While again on the topic of Rosslare Port, George Lawlor raised concern about the lack of progress made on improving the port facilities in light of Brexit.
Education and third-level provision in Wexford was not discussed.
Job Creation and Wexford’s alarmingly high unemployment rate was not discussed.
Regeneration of towns such as Enniscorthy and New Ross was not discussed.
One clear positive from the debate was the behaviour of the candidates. The debate was civil and the participants, in the main, avoided interrupting each other, whilst there appeared to be genuine interest amongst the candidates in listening to each other. Refreshing honesty from Karin Dubsky in admitting that homelessness is not her area of expertise. Perhaps listeners will respect the fact that she didn’t try to pretend otherwise.
