Enniscorthy 4
Dublin North 0
Enniscorthy ladies first XI had home advantage last Saturday as the Wexford side and table toppers took on fourth-placed Dublin North in a Division 6 league clash.
Both teams started off strongly on what was a cold afternoon. As the game progressed, so did the home side’s composure. The Slaneysiders began to develop opportunities for scores from the first quarter with superb link play from throughout the field. Hannah Graham and Jessie Flood were strong in defence while linking up well with midfield and creating plays up the wings. Aoife Mahon was solid in the centre, providing an outlet for the wings when they came under pressure from the visiting attack. Enniscorthy’s hungry forwards were quick but patient in their attack, winning multiple penalty corners throughout the game. May Wickham and Ciara Kelly capitalised on opportunities early in the encounter to give Enniscorthy a 2-0 advantage.
The visitors used strong, hard-hit balls in an endeavour to attack, which proved hard for the home side to defend at times. Enniscorthy continued to work the ball up the field well throughout the third and fourth quarters creating opportunities through 2 v 1’s. Sharp-shooters, Kelly and Wickham were accurate again in the final quarter.
A cleverly organised penalty corner gave Ciara Kelly the opportunity to get her name on the score sheet again, with May Wickham doing the same following a string of passes, beginning in the defence and ending in the opposition’s circle, making the scoreline 4-0. Deané Lodewyks was unlucky not to add to the home side’s tally when her shot went only a few inches wide of the Dublin North goal. Only one penalty corner was conceded by the ladies in purple which they defended successfully, giving keeper Norah McGinty a clean sheet.
Player of the match was awarded to Leah Kidd who showed great creativity and composure in the centre throughout the game. Overall, a great team effort was displayed and Enniscorthy ladies will look to continue improving their performances in the coming games. Enniscorthy continue their lead of Division 6.
