Jamie Codd takes point-to-point spoils

Two point-to-point fixtures today and a relatively quiet day for Wexford stables by their own standards but Jamie Codd managed to ride a brace of winners at Stonehall, Co. Limerick, and he is now on the nine-winner mark for the new season.

Codd opened his account aboard Yousayitbest on his first run by two lengths for owner/handler Cian Hughes in the maiden race for four year old geldings.

Codd’s second winner was on Immortality by two and a half lengths in the maiden race for five year old mares and a fine success for Andrew and Paul Pierce of Blackhall, Killurin.

Runner-up to Immortality was Midway To Getaway from the Redbridge Stables, Duncormick, and Michael Murphy, who has made a great start to the season and went on to score a narrow victory with Bobby Bow in the maiden race for five year old geldings. So a first and second placings in consecutive races for Murphy and his promising young rider Tiernan Roche Power, (21), from Tomhaggard.

There was only one Wexford winner on the card at Damma House, Kilkenny, today, when Colin Bowe saddled the winner of the maiden race for four year olds, Prince Escalus, by eight lengths with James Kenny, Craanford, in the saddle. Bowe’s latest winner is for sale.

It is always exciting when a new track appears and the The Wexford Hunt will unveil their new track at Knockmullen House, located about a mile from New Ross, next Sunday, with the first of six races off at 12 mid-day.

It is a good viewing track with spectators parking above the track and looking down at the finish. The track is set over three fields, it has been described as “a fair track and with a good uphill finish”. There are two fences on the home straight, one at the top and two on the back straight.

The card consists of a maiden race for four year olds; a five years old geldings maiden race; a five years old adjacent mares race; a Winner of One; an Open Race (confined to novice riders) and the maiden race for six year olds plus. Good racing is guaranteed and a good attendance would be a deserving outcome for the organising committee.

Remaining fixtures for NOVEMBER; Sunday, 17th, Wicklow Hunt at Fairwood, Tinahely. Saturday, 24th, Killinick Harriers, Lingstown, Tomhaggard. DECEMBER; Sunday, 8th, Carlow Farmers at Borris House, Borris.
