Saturday saw Enniscorthy’s ladies second XI host their Portrane counterparts at the Astro Active Centre in what ended up being a goal fest, with the net being found eight times despite difficult weather conditions.
It was the visiting side which started the quicker, scoring after just five minutes. Enniscorthy’s midfield pairing of Redmond and Kelly worked hard to get their team back in the game, while Freyne up front was also causing plenty of problems for the Portrane defence. The north county Dublin side, though, hit for a second time just before the end of the second quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the county Wexford side, with Redmond pegging a goal back for Enniscorthy, while Kelly and Dempsey were also in tremendous form. At the back, the defensive unit of D’Alton, Bolger, O’Brien and Power worked hard to keep Portrane away, with some fantastic saves from Harrington in goal.
The away team showed plenty of determination, and following a series of penalty corners, scored another two goals in the third quarter. Enniscorthy worked hard to get back in the game, and with the support of Parnell and Squire, Dempsey scored a fantastic goal for the home team.
With the weather conditions worsening, the final quarter was a tough fight for Enniscorthy. Walsh and Parnell had a few great opportunities up in the forward line, but it was very hard to deter Portrane from the home goal. The away team displayed no mercy towards Enniscorthy, scoring two more goals before the final whistle, leaving the end result 6-2 to Portrane.
Enniscorthy have a tough weekend ahead, encountering Muckross V, who are currently third in the league table, on Saturday in Dublin.
