The lamented death has occurred of Fr Donal Berney, (61), who was ordained over 37 years ago and served as parish priest of Kilanerin/Ballyfad from 2013 until his retirement in December 2016.

A native of Foxcover, Monaseed, Fr Berney was educated at Monaseed National School, St. Peter’s College, Wexford, and St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and was ordained on June 19th 1982 in Craanford.

Having obtained his Higher Diploma in Education in 1982 and 1983, he was appointed to the staff of St Peter’s College in September 1983.

In 1988 he was secunded to the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, where he served as a curate in Mountmellick before his appointment as curate at Curracloe/Screen from December 2nd 1995. He served there for 13 years and also served a short stint at Ballymurn. In 2009, Fr Berney was appointed to Crossbridge for five years until appointed parish priest of Kilanerin/Ballyfad.

FAMILY NOTICE Fr. Donal Berney, Ballyfad, Inch, passed away, peacefully, at Blackrock Clinic after a long illness bravely borne, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 24th. Pre-deceased by his parents Pat and Mary Berney. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Breda and Bernie, brothers Jimmy, Mattie and Pat, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends. Deeply regretted by the Bishop and the Priests of the Diocese of Ferns. Rest In Peace.

Reposing at Murphy’s Funeral Home, The Avenue, Gorey, today, Tuesday August 27th from 2 pm with removal at 7 pm to St. Patrick’s Church, Monaseed. Funeral Mass on Wednesday at 12 noon, followed by burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Monaseed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
