Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, Cathaoirleach, Enniscorthy Municipal District Council said she was “deeply honoured to represent the local authority and to recognise and remember all those who died or gave service for world peace,” as chief speaker at the Irish United Nations Veterans’ Association (IUNVA) held at the Orchard Peace Park, Enniscorthy, last Sunday.
“This is the inaugural event of remembrance in the new Orchard Peace Park, following relocation this year from the National 1798 Centre and I think it is very fitting that both the peace monument and naming of the park have placed the memory of our peace keeping troops at the centre of their ethos.”
Cllr Codd-Nolan continued; “We see here today, the many peace keeping missions that our soldiers have represented our country on foreign shores, with honour and bravery. From the 1960’s in the Congo, to countries such as the Lebanon, Cyprus, the Middle East, Somalia, to name but a few, our United Nations Peace Keeping Troops have represented their country on the global stage in defending democracy, protecting human rights and justice, so that people can live in a more humane and peaceful society. This is a continuing challenge to our forces as we look at the international conflict that exists across the globe.”
