Wexford’s Caoimhne Kinsella wins GOLD for Ireland

Referee hold up the victorious arm of Caoimhe Kinsella at the European Championships in Georgia where she won the gold medal in the 38kg final.

Caoimhne Kinsella has become Wexford’s latest superstar sportsperson having won gold in the 38kg division at the 2019 European Schoolboys/girls Championships  in Tbilisi, Georgia, this morning.

The 13 years old from Marshalstown, Enniscorthy, reached the final against Gulcan Turgul of Turkey assured of, at least a silver medal, but she put in an outstanding personal performance and was declared the winner and will bring a gold medal to Wexford.

Kinsella recorded an inside the distance win over her Turkish opponent to top the 38kg podium. Turgul started brightly but Kinsella began to repeatedly find the target with her left, with a few rights thrown into the bargain, and the contest was stopped by the referee in the second round after the brave but outclassed Turkish girl took a second count. Kinsella, who flew out on Monday, won her semi-final bout against Tamar Samelia of Georgia, 5-0, on Friday.

Caoimhe learned her ring skills at St. Anthony’s – St. Patrick’s Boxing Club at Enniscorthy and is the only Wexford sportsperson on the 32-person mixed team of 20 boys 12 girls, junior cadets aged 12 and 13 years.

It has been a good week for the Irish boxers who won a record-breaking 18 medals – two gold, six silver and 10 bronze -at the 2019 Championships. Team Ireland finished fifth in the medals table and fourth in the rankings table amongst 30 nations particpating.
